The promises we make.

I told myself that I would write at least one blog post per month.

Here I am on the last day of September, on the train during my 1 hour commute rattling my brain to come up with a theme for this post, nothing.

So I looked more at the situation I had put myself in and it reminded me the promises we make to ourselves and don’t keep.

I am starting that course this year.

I am going to quit smoking

I am going to reach my goal weight

I am going to travel to that place

I am only eating what is on my plan

I am going to start my business

I am not getting drunk this weekend

These are all promises I have made to myself at some point and all but 1 I kept.

This doesn’t mean that we stop trying or think ourselves weak and lacking in will power.

Promise noun: A declaration or assurance that one will do something or that a particular thing will happen.

Why do we make promises?

By declaring something to ourselves we make it more real. By speaking it we are taking the steps to bring it into existence. We think we will hold ourselves accountable and we do have the best intentions at heart.

Sharing something with someone who you trust and respect will also help hold you accountable.

Sometimes you don’t even have to explicitly promise it to them, you just have to tell them you will do it. If your value their opinion of you enough you will do it.

Why do we break promises?

We are human beings and we do fall short at times. We break our promises and that does not mean that there is something wrong with us. I just means that we didn’t make it a priority or we procrastinated so much until it was too late.

According to Wikipedia, Procrastination is the avoidance of doing a task that needs to be accomplished by a certain deadline.

Don’t we all know this one, last minute dashing, throwing something together.

One thing I will try to do is not to find myself this last minute blog writing due to procrastination, while trying not to break my promise. My commute is almost up as I hear the announcement pulling into Zurich main station. By the skin of my teeth, this September blog post is up.

How do you handle promises and procrastination? I would love to hear.

If you found this post helpful please let me know and feel free to share it.

Until next time take care of yourselves and of each other.
